Building a talented team that works well together is important and challenging work. We’re recognizing the best hiring and recruiting strategies (Best Careers Page, Best Referral Program, Best Job Description, and more) with the inaugural Workies Awards. Without further ado, here are our 2015 finalists.

Small Business of the Year

Open to companies with fewer than 100 employees. Nominated for great culture, hiring, talent, or just a great story.

Mention – Hundreds and thousands of companies use Mention to listen in on conversations about their brand. A major accomplishment by a lean and mean team of fewer than 50 employees.

BrewBot – The company with the beer brewing robots does a great job at attracting talented people with a taste for craft beer. The beauty is in the details, like encouraging new hires to brew their own beer and participate in tastings.

DICE – Love live music but hate ticketing sites? So do a lot of people. DICE aims to be the first ticketing site that music fans love. They’re making it happen by eliminating hefty booking fees,  providing a stylish, straightforward user interface and of course, curating all the best shows.

Best Careers Page

We’re highlighting just how good a careers page can be. Open to all Workable customers (using the API or Workable-hosted).

Culture Post Dtelepathy
Movio – It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the movie marketers at Movio love video and use it well. Their careers page features short videos introducing their executive team and a video intro to the company.

Intercom – Since Intercom’s always hiring engineers, they made a careers page tailored to those candidates. Smart.

Digital Telepathy – Their careers page brings their company culture to life with videos, colorful photos, and blogs that detail who they’re looking for and why.

Best Referral Program

The oldest and best way to hire. We’re recognizing fresh and effective thinking on referrals.

eFounders – A combination of Slack, Workable, and non-cash incentives like gadgets and cheese helps this talented crew tap the potential of their powerful networks.

Raizlabs – Adventure’s the name of the game at Raizlabs. Whoever refers the successful hire gets to pick one of four fun trips, including dogsledding in Maine and cavorting in the Florida Keys.

Ashoka  – A non-profit innovating in their hiring. Ashoka staff in 47 countries are encouraged to share their resume or LinkedIn profile, partly to make it easier for a distributed international team to collaborate on projects, and partly so they can be considered for new roles.

Best Job Description

Great job descriptions attract great candidates. Here’s our top picks for clear, thoughtful, and enticing job descriptions.

Handwriting.io – “You should know what a btree is, you should know how to model in 3rd normal form, you should know when not to model in 3rd normal form.” Talk about hands-on knowledge of what a Senior Backend Engineer actually does. Also, yachts.

Helpscout – Help Scout respects writers and it shows, from the Thomas Mann quote down to the emphasis that this person will be creating compelling, interesting work and not churning out more noise for the internet.

Ecovent -“We’ll never script your response or force you to put on your ‘business face.’” That’s from Ecovent’s Customer Experience Associate job description. Also, their executive team sounds absolutely fascinating.

Best Employer Brand

These are the companies that made you want to apply even before you saw the ad.

Shapeways career pag

Typeform – Typeform demonstrates pride in their product (in their case, beautiful forms) by using it as a recruiting tool. In addition, their well-maintained Instagram account paints a vivid picture of what it’s like to work there.

Shapeways – Shapeways’ “Who You Are” section on their career page is excellent. Not to mention, that whole thing about defining an industry and having fun while doing it is the perfect call to action for skilled, ambitious candidates anywhere.

LostMyName – These storytellers are fantastic at telling their own story. They’re also incredibly transparent and detailed about their hiring process.

Decisions, Decisions

Check back next week to see all the winners, including those for the following categories, which will be mined from Workable’s own data:

  • Recruiter Award – The busiest and most effective recruiter using Workable
  • Talent Magnet – The job with the highest number of applications in 2015.
  • Rocket Ship Award for Team-Building – The highest growth team from the thousands of companies using Workable.

We’ll also be announcing prizes. All winners will receive the opportunity to further hone their hiring and technical skills on platforms like Lynda.com and the Interaction Design Foundation.
