5050tech Challenge boosting UK women in tech

It would be hard to tell that there are just as many men as women in the UK by looking at the tech sector. Women currently occupy just 17% of tech jobs. Doteveryone, a new organization led by Martha Lane Fox, aims to change this by putting women at the heart of the technology sector.

We’re creating investment opportunities and meaningful mentorship from industry leaders as a core element of our effort to make Britain brilliant in the networked age. We believe that by making the UK the most gender-balanced tech sector in the world, our nation will have a massive global competitive advantage.

Doteveryone has opened applications for the first ever 5050tech challenge, an initiative designed to encourage gender balance across technology leadership and events. And we’ve chosen Workable to help us find the talent that’s out there.

We’re now looking for start-ups based anywhere in the UK with at least one female co-founder seeking early-stage or seed funding and / or mentoring to be a part of our first 5050tech Challenge which takes place on February 8th at Campus London.

The Challenge has two parts

First is the Pitch Clinic on February 7th where 12 successful start-ups will receive a day of mentorship and training from industry leaders at Campus London.

Then there is the Pitch Day & Showcase on February 8th where the startups will give a two-minute pitch to a room of over 30 seed investors and VCs, followed by a hands-on informal showcase where they can demo their work and discuss mentorship opportunities.

To apply your business should be an internet-enabled technology company, and can be in any area of technology e.g. finance, health, education etc and either across any for-profit or social enterprise startups from across the UK.

Deadline for applications is 12:00 (BST) 22nd January 2016. A shortlist of 25 startups will be announced on the 25th of January 2016 who will then be asked to submit a two-minute pitch video by the 27th January 2016.

The final 12 will be announced on the 28th of January, 2016 and invited to join us on the 7th and 8th February for the first 5050tech Challenge.

Apply for the 5050Challenge, via Workable.
