We’re back with our continuing coverage of #HRTechConf 2015. Yesterday, we tackled social recruiting, using video to support high-volume hiring and employee advocacy. Today, we’re talking about machine learning, nurturing ideation in your company, and building world-class technical teams.
What’s the big deal about “machine learning”?
"Machine learning" wins for the most mentions during "beyond the hype" session – #HRTechConf

Catching up on #HRTechConf tweets. 1) WTH is machine learning? and 2) tweeting "Come by my booth" never works, vendors.

I do have a horrible feeling that post #hrtechconf “machine learning” will become the new hype phrase. #RIPGamification

At Day 2 of #HRTechConf, it’s clear that machine learning isn’t just a buzzword. It’s the future of HR tech and companies like ADP, Zenefits, and Workday are paving the way. Sounds fancy, but what is it? Is it A.I.? Yes. Is it statistics? No. Machine learning enables HR tech to sift through data, discover patterns, and turn patterns into predictions. Predictions such as whether or not your best engineer is about to jump ship. Whew, that was close.
HR’s new role — creating a culture of ideation?
I'd invest in that! "Wingit" by team @ADP – "where great ideas soar" gives wings to new ideas. #HRTechConf Hackathon pic.twitter.com/13TihobgiD

Nice Hack @CornerstoneInc Corner Starter: Crowd funded employee ideas, a brilliant way to drive innovation #HRTechConf

Who’s responsible for fostering ideation and innovation? The team leader? HR? Either way, given a blank slate, three teams had ideation on their minds at today’s first-ever HR tech hackathon. Two out of the three (ADP, Cornerstone OnDemand) produced tools to help surface your employees’ best ideas. Team building is a core feature for both. These tools help “idea people” put together the team that can bring their brilliant concepts to fruition.
Two fresh ideas for building world-class technical teams

At Ultimate Software, recruiters bridge the gap for their near misses (candidates who had almost everything they were looking for) with training programs. This creates a more diverse talent pipeline. That’s right — it’s one way to fix tech’s diversity problem.
Another great idea: to retain their best tech talent, Cornerstone OnDemand has established “special interest councils,” opportunities for technologists to work on subjects that are near and dear to their heart. Techies love it because they get to share interests with peers while learning new things.
